Strip the EXIF from a photo
Removes GPS location, date, camera model and embedded thumbnails. It runs in your browser: the photo is never uploaded.
Every photo a phone takes carries a small dossier written into it: the handset model, the exact date and time, the camera settings and, if you had location switched on, the coordinates of where you were, accurate to the metre. It is called EXIF and it travels with the photo when you send it by email, post it in an ad or file it as evidence.
Here the photo is drawn again pixel by pixel and saved anew. Whatever is not pixels (the EXIF, the GPS, the embedded thumbnail, the profiles) stays out. The orientation is respected before it is thrown away, so the photo does not come out rotated, and the image you see is exactly the one that was there.
FAQ
Is there any loss of quality?
It is recompressed as JPEG at high quality. In a PNG there is no loss at all. You will not see a difference.
Does it remove the hidden thumbnail too?
Yes, and it matters: the thumbnail is not always cropped along with the photo, so a cropped image can still show the small version in full.
Which formats does it take?
JPG, PNG and WebP. If what you want is to cover something in the image, not just strip the data, use redact a photo.
