Redact a photo

Mark the plate, the face or the ID that shows and those pixels really disappear. The EXIF goes too. It runs in your browser: the photo is never uploaded.

When you have to show a screenshot, a scanned contract or a picture of a conversation, there is almost always something that should not be there: a name, an account number, an address. You mark over it and those pixels disappear from the image. No rectangle is drawn on top: the pixels are replaced before saving, so there is nothing to recover by peeling off a layer.

On saving, the photo is re-encoded in full, so the EXIF goes with it, location and camera included: two problems at once. You can black it out, which does not let anyone see there was something there, or pixelate it, which does but keeps it unreadable. It works the same for a screenshot as for a photo of a paper contract, and like everything else it happens in your browser: the image is not uploaded anywhere to be redacted.

FAQ

Can the redaction be undone?

No. The original pixels do not travel in the file you take away: they were replaced before saving.

Black or pixelated?

Black, if you do not want anyone to know what was there. Pixelated, if you want it visible that a piece of data was there but unreadable. For faces, coarse pixelation is enough and looks less aggressive.

Does it work for screenshots?

Yes, it is one of the most common uses: a WhatsApp or case-management screenshot with a couple of details properly removed.
